Scituate Public Schools Foodservice Fall 2021

We are thrilled to be welcoming back students this Fall 2021! I wanted to share with you some good news that schools nationwide received over the summer. The USDA extended a waiver that allows schools to serve free meals to ALL students, through 6/30/2022. We are thrilled with this news as it means that we will be able to provide all Scituate students with the option of nutritious food for free that will support them, both in school and at home.

What this means for your family and for Scituate Public Schools:

•Your children, ages 0-21, can receive a healthy meal every school day, at no cost, in a safe and welcoming
environment. This applies to all students.

•This DOES NOT include second meals, snacks, bottled water, or extra milk. Those items will become available
this school year, but just not yet for the start of school.

Here are some highlights/outlines of how service will look to start the year:

All schools – Due to unforeseen issues, our register system is not up and running with the new guidelines. This will delay
the offering of snacks and second meals until further notice. Our goal is to have the POS system, myschoolbucks, and ala
carte items available ASAP and will send out further communication as soon as we can.

Elementary – Upon entering the serving line, the foodservice staff will ask for the student’s name. This will allow us to
cross reference allergies and insure that we’re providing a safe meal to every student. Students will then be assisted in
choosing their meal and beverage. A foodservice staff member will count their meal as the student leaves the lunch line.

Gates & SHS – Upon entering the serving line, the foodservice staff will as the student if they have any allergies. This will
allow us openly engage with the student to ensure that we’re providing a safe meal to them. Students will then be
assisted in choosing their meal and beverage. A foodservice staff member will count their meal as the student leaves the
lunch line.

**As soon as our POS is up and running with the new guidelines, we will begin to offer second meals and snacks to
students after the first "rush" of meals have been served (likely 10 minutes into each lunch period). There will be
absolutely NO “CHARGING” of snacks or second meals, as students who are hungry will be provided ample
items/options with the “first” meal.**

Free/Reduced Application – Will still be emailed out for families to complete in order to help with status next year.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email and I’d be happy to set up a time to have a conversation over
the phone.

Thank you,
David Stevens, SPS Foodservice Director
