Physical Education

The district's overarching philosophy toward physical education (P.E.) is for students to experience and understand the short-term and long-term benefits of physical activity and to motivate them to be lifelong movers. Complementary to this philosophy is our fundamental departmental belief that a strong P.E. program must promote inclusion, appropriately challenge students physically and mentally and embrace problem solving through cooperation and teamwork. The basis of this belief comes from our K-12 Project Adventure curriculum. In the elementary grades, these values are accomplished through manipulative (throwing, catching, sticking, etc.), locomotor (running, skipping, hopping, etc.) and non-locomotor (twisting, balancing, extending, etc.) skills developed as an individual and in cooperative groups. At Gates and as freshmen and sophomores in high school, a student's P.E. experience will include progressive cooperative group challenges, lifelong wellness activities, a hands-on personal fitness experience and various traditional and non-traditional team sports. In grades 11 and 12, students select their own focused P.E. elective which, depending on the elective selected, could include the use of our dynamic adventure education course.

In addition to Physical Education programming during the school day, the following supporting/extension opportunities are also available to enrich student experiences:

  • State of the Movement Studio at Gates Middle School & Scituate H.S. Fitness Center (M-Th, 2:45-4:15pm)
  • Elementary (4th & 5th Grade) and Gates Turkey Trots (November) and Spring Track Meet (May)
  • Engaging and community-building Field Days at elementary schools and at Gates Middle School
  • School spirit-building physical activity tournaments at the High School

  • Grades K – 5: Receive 1, 45-minute P.E. class per week.
  • Grades 6-8: Receive a half-year (every other week for the school year) of 50-minute P.E. class.
  • Grades 9 – 12: Receive one quarter of P.E. per school year.
