Our Mission Statement:

The MA Model for School Counseling

The Massachusetts Model for Comprehensive School Counseling, also known as the “MA Model,” is an all-encompassing, systematic, data-driven, results approach to school counseling that supports all student achievement and educational reform objectives.  The MA Model is based on the nationally-recognized, American School Counselor Association framework and incorporates the Massachusetts Career Development Benchmarks.  The MA model is an integral and essential component of the mission of the Scituate Public Schools and School Improvement Plans. The overarching goal is to develop and deliver programs/services that provide ALL students with the requisite knowledge and skills for success in the academic, workplace readiness, and personal social domains.  Under the MA Model umbrella, counselors act as leaders and coordinators of program delivery; they attend to students’ developmental needs in ways that enable them to achieve success in their endeavors in education, workplace & society.  Counselors evaluate, modify, and develop their programs for alignment with the CDE benchmarks for academic, college & work place readiness and personal/social/emotional domains. Counselors implement evidence-based interventions and measure effectiveness of program and services.

Scituate High School

School counselors play an essential role in the academic success of all students. Counseling services are available to all students and parents to assist in educational, vocational, and personal matters. School counselors meet with each student individually throughout the year, along with small group meetings to discuss student interests, abilities, course selections, educational and vocational opportunities, and personal or social concerns.  Upon enrolling at Scituate High School, each student is assigned to a counselor who will follow the student through graduation. The counselors work intimately with each student to help develop and implement a successful high school and post-secondary plan that meet their individual goals and objectives. Students and parents should feel free to consult with their counselors at any time during the school year. Throughout the year, the counseling department conducts programs for students and parents/caregivers to assist students in the post-secondary planning and financial aid process. The department hosts college admissions representatives who meet with students in small groups throughout the fall, and also provides opportunities to explore alternatives to the 4-year college route including: technical and trade schools, community college, military options, gap years, etc.

Counselors implement the school counseling curriculum providing lessons in topics such as transitioning for incoming students; post-secondary planning tools; college application process, financial aid workshops, and lessons that promote healthy social and emotional decision making.

The School Adjustment Counselor offers confidential individual and group meetings with students in grades 9-12 with social and/or emotional issues impacting school performance.  Working collaboratively with caregivers, students, faculty and administrators, the School Adjustment Counselor helps students identify and implement strategies in addressing issues of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, peer and family conflict and more.  Groups offered include stress management, healthy decision making, students impacted by substance abuse, peer and social skills.  Any student, faculty or caregiver may initiate a meeting regarding a student of concern.

The School Counseling department also provides informational services and materials for students and parents. Available materials include school and college catalogues; employment, vocational and occupational information; scholarship and financial aid booklets; armed services brochures; and reference information regarding college admissions testing (PSAT, SAT, SAT –Subject Tests, AP and the ACT). The high school library also holds a myriad of guidance-related information that students can peruse at their leisure.

Naviance/Family Connection, the web-based college and communication network links students and families with the resources and information necessary for academic and post-secondary planning. All students and parents/caretakers are given a Naviance/Family Connection account, and are encouraged to check it often f or important information on the college application process.  Training in the use of Naviance/Family Connection is provided for all students and families.

The SHS School Counseling website also provides comprehensive information on all matters relating to academic, social, and post-secondary success. Department forms, news and events, scholarship and award opportunities are updated regularly.

Gates Intermediate School

 

School Counselors are assigned to students when they enter Gates.  That counselor will follow those students into the 8th grade.  Counselors are available to all students as needed, either for one time support or short goal focused counseling.    In addition, counselors provide classroom instruction in three areas:   Social/Emotional, Academic Success and Career Exploration.  Some of these lessons include: Building self-confidence, Decision Making, Problem Solving, Conflict Resolution, Interpersonal Skills, Managing Emotions, and Career Exploration through the Career Day, Interest Inventory, Study Skills, Learning Styles, Self-Advocacy, and Time Management.

Counselors also offer support to students in the form of small groups.  Groups are formed based on need and in the past of include: Managing Anxiety and Stress, Developing Executive Functioning Skills, Girls Group.

Our School Adjustment Counselor provides services to students with more severe social, emotional, and behavioral needs. Services include student, parent, and family counseling. Our School Adjustment Counselor works with students and families to help students succeed in school, home and the community. Referrals can be made by contacting the school counselors.

Cushing, Hatherly, Jenkins and Wampatuck Elementary Schools

The following counseling services are available to Scituate elementary school students. The services children receive depend upon the input from the classroom teacher, parents or the Student Support Team.  The school counseling program is designed to ensure that all students can achieve school success through academic, career and personal/social/emotional developmental experiences to become productive and caring citizens.

Classroom Counseling Lessons

Students receive classroom guidance with the school counselor based on the needs of a particular classroom and grade level.  The curriculum imparts specific skills and learning experiences in a pro-active and preventative manner.  These skills are introduced and reinforced to meet the needs of our students at various growth and developmental stages. 

1.  Academic Goals:  Students will acquire the attitudes, knowledge and skills to become responsible and productive learners.

2.  Career Goals: Students will acquire knowledge about how one’s own skills and interests influence their future life choices.

3.  Personal and Social Goal:  Students will acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect oneself and others.  Students will learn effective coping strategies for dealing with emotional regulation.

Small Group Counseling

Students have the opportunity (with parental permission) to participate in small group counseling with the school counselor.  The groups usually consist of 4-6 students and often meet during unstructured times, such as lunch.  There are different groups depending on the needs of the students. Building friendships, social skills and self-esteem as well as supporting children of non-traditional families are some of the types of groups facilitated by the school counselor.

Individual Counseling

Some issues which children may be struggling with are dealt more effectively on an individual basis.  Students in need of individualized attention from the counselor receive individual counseling with parental permission.
