Dear Rising Grade 6 Families:

We are excited to begin working with you and preparing your rising sixth grade student to join us at the new Lester J. Gates Middle School.  We have been busy for several years planning the design, construction, and equipment for the new building, and now begins the most important phase: welcoming our students and their families!  The new building will enable teams to have classrooms in close proximity, and also have flexible furniture and technology to support 21st century teaching and learning.

While the building will be new, middle school staff are experienced teachers and excited to support students as they grow into more independent learners.  We also recognize that sixth-grade students have their own developmental needs.  The design of the building affords sixth grade students to be together in their wing and be well-supported by their team teachers.

I’m sure you have questions about the next step in your child’s educational journey.  Gates Middle School is a positive place and always getting better.  We are excited to have your student here next year and happy to answer any questions that you have.

We will begin to transition your fifth-grader to Gates by visiting the fifth-graders at their home elementary schools between March 22nd and 24th.  During this visit we will introduce ourselves to the students, provide them with some “need to know” information, and address some of their frequently asked questions.  This meeting gets the fifth graders thinking about middle school and is often a great way for you to have more in-depth conversations with your child about this transition.

Providing you, the parents and guardians, with information about Gates is an equally important step in the transition process.  We invite you to join us on Tuesday, May 16th at 7:30 PM at the Scituate Performing Arts Center, when we will be hosting a “Welcome to Gates Evening” for parents.  The meeting will be held at the Performing Arts Center so you can be on the same property as the middle school and see it from the outside.  We will not be able to provide tours on this evening, but we will welcome students and families in August when the new middle school is complete and handed-over to the Town.  At the presentation on May 16th, we will share provide detailed information on our program of studies, curriculum, team philosophy, supports for students and the design of the new building.  You will have the opportunity to meet Mr. Lynch, Mr. Giacobozzi, Ms. Mahoney, Ms. Ciulla (World Language Department Chair), and your student’s school counselor at Gates.  This meeting will address many of the questions you have and will provide you the opportunity to familiarize yourself with our school.

As a follow-up to this letter, we will use ASPEN to provide families with directions for accessing scheduling information and for choosing your student’s world language options.

In a typical year, we also would invite incoming students to Step-Up day in the spring, but the new middle school will not be ready for students until August.  Therefore, we will host orientation for incoming students on Friday, September 1st at the new middle school.  We will send an agenda for this day before the end of the school year.

Please mark your calendar for these three important dates.  This is an exciting and special transition, and don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions during this process.

Best,

Ryan Lynch, Gates Principal
