Space Study

PreK-12 Resource & Space Committee

The district’s PreK-12 Resource & Space Committee formed in the fall of 2004 to study overcrowding at Jenkins, space issues across the district, and the next steps for the Habeeb Report. A committee of 20-30 parents, educators and community members met on a weekly basis to study data and discuss possible options for the future. At our first meeting, in October 2004, we articulated our goals for the year:

Purpose of PreK-12 Resource & Space Committee: To discuss core values and commitments of the community and make recommendations to school committee on how to address three district-wide issues:

  1. How will school-aged populations shift in town over the coming five years? We need a comprehensive review of projected enrollments over the next five years. This will entail a discussion of our values regarding class size and maximum enrollments at each school.
  2. What is our vision for a Middle School Model in Scituate? Do we want a middle school at all? If yes, what combination of grade levels would be best: 7-8; 6-7-8; 5-6-7-8? What will this mean for other schools/grade levels in town?
  3. Given space concerns at the High School, what programs (particularly Central Office, Recreation and Early Childhood) may need to find alternate locations? Also, if we move to a full day Kindergarten model, should Early Childhood move from SHS to a district-wide “Early Childhood Center” that would also include full day Kindergarten classrooms?
